Picturing Israel: History, Heritage and Homeland

We are excited to launch Picturing Israel: History, Heritage and Homeland - a powerful new curricular resource developed by the creators of The Jewish Lens and made available, thanks to generous support from The Covenant Foundation.

What Is Picturing Israel: History, Heritage and Homeland?

Picturing Israel: History, Heritage and Homeland is an innovative curriculum that blends rich content, powerful imagery, and creative pedagogy. It invites learners to explore the richness and diversity of Jewish life and deep bond with the Land of Israel. Participants will discover how Jews worldwide have long looked to Israel and Zion with steadfast hope and enduring commitment, and how, in recent decades, Israel has worked to realize its founding aspirational vision of a vibrant, inclusive society. Learners will come to understand Israel as a cornerstone of Jewish History, Heritage and Homeland.

Picturing Israel utilizes the power of the image. Featuring photographs of renowned photographer, Zion Ozeri, this curriculum incorporates skills in analyzing and creating photographs with deep exploration of traditional and modern Jewish texts. Through this unique content and pedagogy, learners explore themes and pivotal events in Jewish history and build personal connections to each other, the Jewish people and to the land, state and people of Israel.

Picturing Israel utilizes The Jewish Lens pedagogy of The 3 E’s: Experience, Emotion & Empowerment.

Why Now?

Picturing Israel: History, Heritage and Homeland was created in response to the tragedy of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent rise of global antisemitism and anti-Zionism. As educators across settings search for new approaches for their learners to feel grounded, empowered and connected, Picturing Israel provides specialized content and pedagogy to support learners with content knowledge, critical thinking skills, confidence in their Jewish identity and personal connection to Israel and the Jewish People.

Who Is It For?

Picturing Israel is designed for Jewish educators working with upper elementary, middle school, and high school students in synagogues, day schools, camps, and other educational environments. It is adaptable for both year-round programs and short-term implementation.
